McCaffrey shines as 49ers beat Giants in Week 9 amid penalty drama

Christian McCaffrey played a pivotal role in the San Francisco 49ers’ Week 9 victory over the New York Giants, helping the team bounce back from a disappointing 26-15 loss to the Houston Texans the previous week. The Niners secured a 34-24 win on November 2, showcasing McCaffrey’s impressive performance.

The two-time All-Pro running back shone with a game-high 28 carries for 106 yards, marking his second 100-yard rushing game of the season; he previously rushed for 129 yards against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7. Additionally, McCaffrey made an impact in the passing game, recording five receptions for 67 yards and a receiving touchdown, highlighting his dual-threat capability.

A notable moment during the game involved a controversial call against Giants defensive back Dane Belton, who was penalized for tripping McCaffrey in the fourth quarter. Belton extended his leg as McCaffrey was being tackled by Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke, leading to a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness. This incident drew the attention of the NFL Officiating Department, which subsequently fined Belton $7,201 for his actions.

This was Belton’s first offense for unnecessary roughness. A repeat offense could result in a fine that escalates to $17,968. Earlier this season, he also faced a fine of $5,923 for unsportsmanlike conduct during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Both teams are set to continue their seasons, with the struggling 2-7 Giants preparing to face the Chicago Bears, while the 49ers, now 6-3, will take on the 6-2 Los Angeles Rams in a highly anticipated matchup. As the season progresses, McCaffrey’s performance will be crucial for the Niners in their pursuit of playoff success.
