BOSTON — The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has announced the cancellation of Blue Line service between Bowdoin and Orient Heights this weekend, in response to the expected severe winter weather conditions.

In a press release issued on Thursday, the MBTA indicated that the service suspension, initially set to run from Bowdoin to the Airport, was extended to Orient Heights. This decision was made to enhance operational management of switch infrastructure during the anticipated extremely cold temperatures.

To accommodate Blue Line riders during this interruption, alternate travel options will be available on January 24 and 25. Shuttle buses will operate between the designated stops, although Bowdoin, Government Center, State, and Aquarium stations will not be serviced.

Additionally, the East Boston Ferry will provide free services over the weekend, with riders encouraged to check the ferry schedules for detailed information. Passengers will also benefit from free fares at select fare gates, including Airport, Wood Island, Orient Heights, Suffolk Downs, Beachmont, Revere Beach, and Wonderland.

The MBTA advises commuters to plan for an extra 30 to 40 minutes for their journeys if utilizing the shuttle buses. For further details regarding the Blue Line suspension and available services, riders can visit the MBTA’s official website.

This proactive measure demonstrates the MBTA’s commitment to ensuring the safety and convenience of its riders during inclement weather, ultimately fostering a reliable transportation experience in the region.
