Max Muncy will continue his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers for at least two more seasons following a recent agreement on a one-year extension worth $7 million for the 2027 season. The team announced this development on Thursday, along with a $10 million club option for 2028, which comes with a $3 million buyout clause.
At 35 years old, Muncy was initially under contract through the 2026 season, following the Dodgers’ decision to exercise his $10 million club option. He was on the brink of free agency at the end of the current season.
Last season saw Muncy batting .243 with a .376 on-base percentage and a .470 slugging percentage, accumulating 19 home runs and 67 RBIs over 100 games. His time on the field was impacted by injuries, including a knee bone bruise and oblique issues. In the postseason, Muncy’s performance included a .214 batting average, with 11 walks, three homers, and three RBIs. Notably, he significantly contributed to the Dodgers’ success in the World Series, including a pivotal home run in Game 7 that sparked a comeback victory against the Toronto Blue Jays, leading to the franchise’s second consecutive championship.
This upcoming season marks Muncy’s ninth with the Dodgers, who signed him as a free agent after he was drafted in the fifth round by the Oakland Athletics in 2012. Throughout his tenure with the team, he has posted a batting line of .232/.358/.485, including 135 doubles, 209 home runs, and 587 RBIs.
During DodgerFest earlier this year, Muncy expressed pride in becoming the longest-tenured player on the team following Clayton Kershaw’s retirement. Reflecting on his journey, Muncy said, “For me, just my personal journey, it’s something I never would have dreamed of…I try to enjoy every second I get here.”
Currently, Muncy’s home run total places him seventh on the Dodgers’ all-time list, trailing Steve Garvey’s 211. With continued health and performance, he is poised to surpass Ron Cey’s 228 homers and could even challenge for higher ranks among the franchise’s legends. This extension not only reinforces Muncy’s value to the Dodgers but also adds excitement for fans looking forward to witnessing his continued contributions on the field.
