Mataks FC Triumphs in Penalty Shootout to Win OFC Futsal Men’s Champions League in Suva

Mataks FC claimed a hard-fought victory over Waikato Rapids in the OFC Futsal Men’s Champions League final held in Suva, overcoming the unbeaten team after a dramatic match that extended to penalties.

During the earlier rounds, the Waikato Rapids had easily bested Mataks FC, but this time the Solomon Islanders showcased their resilience and determination on the grand stage. The match started with urgency, as Waikato’s Benjamin Bordin struck the first blow, scoring from a freekick just outside the box. However, Mataks responded swiftly, with Calvin Do’oro netting the equalizer just a minute later.

Waikato regained the lead through another powerful effort from Bordin, leaving Mataks trailing 2-1 at halftime. The tide turned early in the second half when Mataks’ Elis Mana delivered a skillful pass to Owen Bunabo, who found the back of the net, tying the score at 2-2. Mataks quickly capitalized on their momentum, as Bunabo’s vision facilitated an attack that enabled Eddie Kasute’e to score, putting Mataks ahead for the first time in the match.

Despite Mataks’s performance, a costly mistake from goalkeeper Lordrick Afi allowed Maxwell Ericksen to score, leveling the match at 3-3 by the end of regular time. Late in the extra period, Mataks seemed poised to win again when Do’oro found the net, but Ericksen responded once more to keep Waikato in contention.

The match ultimately culminated in a tense penalty shootout, where Mataks triumphed 12-11 after an intense back-and-forth, securing their first OFC Futsal Men’s Champions League title. This victory highlights the team’s determination and ability to overcome adversity, offering a thrilling conclusion to a remarkable tournament.
