Most public schools and higher education institutions in Maryland have announced closures for Tuesday following a severe winter storm that affected the state over the weekend. The storm brought over 11 inches of snow and sleet in certain areas, resulting in many roads becoming impassable. While the snowfall has halted, the forecast for the remainder of the week indicates dangerously cold temperatures, dipping into the single digits.

Numerous K-12 school systems had already canceled classes on Monday, with many continuing closures into Tuesday and beyond. Here’s an overview of the status of school closures:

Allegany County Public Schools will be closed, with virtual learning planned for the day. Similarly, Anne Arundel County Public Schools are closed for both Tuesday and Wednesday. Other districts such as Baltimore City and Baltimore County Public Schools will also remain closed on Tuesday. Several other counties including Calvert, Charles, Frederick, and Montgomery will follow suit, ensuring safety for students amidst the adverse weather conditions.

In addition to K-12 schools, colleges and universities across Maryland are similarly affected. Allegany College of Maryland is set to open at 11 a.m., while many others, including Bowie State University and Annapolis Community College, will remain closed. Institutions like Frostburg State University plan to open late, while several schools, including the University of Maryland College Park and Johns Hopkins University, canceled in-person classes entirely for the day.

The closures reflect a broad effort to prioritize the safety and well-being of students and staff during this extreme weather period. As the state braces for continued cold, communities are reminded to stay safe and exercise caution during travel and outdoor activities. The hopeful aspect amidst this challenging weather is the proactive response from educational institutions, ensuring that students can continue their learning, whether virtually or through adjusted schedules.
