Mary Jo Young is making a comeback in Season 24 of American Idol after being eliminated in Season 19. In a sneak peek shared by TV Insider, she candidly discusses her motivation for returning to the beloved singing competition.

The 24-year-old first captured the hearts of fans during her previous appearance, where she made it to the Top 24 despite forgetting the lyrics during a duet with Benson Boone. Her journey in Season 19 included receiving enthusiastic support from judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Katy Perry, all of whom recognized her potential.

Reflecting on her prior experience, Mary Jo noted, “When it came to an end, it was a good kicking the baby bird out of its nest because I needed to go and grow.” Since then, she has taken steps to enhance her craft, touring with artists like Alex Warren, JVKE, and Jessie Murph. She expressed newfound confidence, stating, “I feel like I’m a new person.”

Richie provided her with encouraging words, reminding her about the resilience required in the industry: “You’re going to get knocked down and you might get knocked out. Don’t take it personal. Just come back in the ring.”

In her latest audition, Mary Jo performed an original song titled “Don’t Call Me,” leaving the judges smiling and hopeful for her future in the competition. “I wanted to come back to American Idol because I learned the most from being on the show than I have on any tour,” she shared.

Fans eagerly await her fate as the auditions wrap up in the episode airing on Monday, February 16, alongside her fellow contestants. The excitement surrounding Mary Jo’s return serves as a reminder of the growth and perseverance often found in the journey of aspiring artists. American Idol airs on Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.
