The Christmas Cactus that Martha showcases in her Bedford farmhouse originally belonged to her mother. After her passing, Martha’s late sister discovered two small segments of the plant hidden away in a drawer. Inspired, they replanted these segments, giving new life to a plant that has since flourished, symbolizing resilience and family connection. Martha emphasizes the importance of a straightforward care routine to maintain the vitality of the Christmas Cactus. Watering should only occur when the soil feels dry to the touch, as overwatering can lead to unwanted issues. For optimal growth, she suggests using a cactus-specific soil mix, particularly Miracle-Gro Cactus, Palm & Citrus Potting Mix.
To achieve blooms during the holiday season, Martha advises a bit of pre-planning. Starting in mid-September, the plant should be placed in total darkness for fourteen hours each night over a three to four week period, with cooler temperatures maintained during the day and night. After that, the plant can return to its regular care routine.
