Marquette Hosts Dayton in a Midweek BIG EAST Showdown

The Marquette University men’s basketball team is set to continue its four-game homestand on Wednesday evening, taking on the Dayton Flyers at 6:30 p.m. CT in the Fiserv Forum. The matchup will be broadcast nationally on truTV, featuring the commentary of Brian Anderson, Greg Anthony, and Lauren Jbara.

This game marks the conclusion of a home-and-home series between Marquette and Dayton, following the Flyers’ 71-63 victory at UD Arena last season. The Golden Eagles will aim for redemption after that loss. Last season’s standout performance was led by a Marquette guard who scored 19 points and secured five rebounds.

Head coach Shaka Smart’s connection to Dayton runs deep, as he served under Oliver Purnell as the director of basketball operations from 2001 to 2003, during which the Flyers compiled an impressive 45-17 record and clinched the 2003 Atlantic 10 Championship.

Marquette is looking to build on its recent performance, particularly from senior guard who achieved a career-high 31 points against Maryland Saturday. He demonstrated impressive shooting, finishing 10-of-19 from the field in 33 minutes while contributing four assists, three rebounds, and two steals. His scoring average of 20.8 points per game ranks him second in the league, showcasing his development as a primary offensive option.

In addition to this, other team members have stepped into expanded roles this season. Junior guard has increased his playing time significantly, elevating his scoring average from 4.1 to 10.4 points per game. Meanwhile, sophomore forward has transitioned to a starting position after a limited role last year and is now averaging 18.2 minutes with a noted increase in his scoring from 5.1 to 8.2 points per game. Senior forward has also made strides, averaging 8.4 rebounds per game and contributing 18 points in the win over Maryland.

As this young and dynamic Marquette squad, including freshmen, seeks to gel and find its rhythm, fans are optimistic about their growth and performance in this season. Following the game against Dayton, the Golden Eagles will wrap up their homestand on Saturday against Central Michigan. It is an exciting time for Marquette basketball as they strive to improve their record and make a mark in the BIG EAST Conference.
