Marlo Thomas Returns with St. Jude’s Family Commons Unveiling

Marlo Thomas recently made a heartfelt return to the public eye during her appearance on the Today show, marking her first television appearance since the passing of her husband, Phil Donahue. The iconic actress, known for her role in “That Girl,” visited St. Jude’s Research Center to unveil the newly created Family Commons, a vibrant space designed for young patients to engage in play, art, music, and personal care.

Thomas, 88, shared her vision of the Family Commons, emphasizing its importance in providing a sanctuary for children to escape the challenges of their health battles. “It was actually thought of by the parents and the children,” she explained, highlighting the need for a joyful environment where kids can express themselves creatively and feel like children again. The space includes facilities for art creation, musical expression, and even a beauty salon, catering to aspects of childhood that are often overlooked in medical settings.

“Children are so scheduled; what art does in terms of healing is it gives them back control,” she said, showcasing the empowering focus of this new area. Importantly, the space is designated as a no-doctor zone, ensuring that kids can enjoy playtime free from the stresses of medical routines.

Since losing her husband in August 2024, Thomas has gradually returned to public life. Her recent appearances include attending the Family Equality’s Night at Pier Sixty in New York City, her first post-Dunahue outing where she was met with warmth and support from her community.

Donahue, who was 88 at the time of his death, had spent his final moments surrounded by family, including Thomas. In a touching message on Instagram following his passing, she expressed her gratitude for the support from fans and spoke about the deep connection they shared. The couple, who had been married for 44 years, first met on the set of his talk show in 1977, and Thomas fondly recalled their instant chemistry.

With vibrant new initiatives like the Family Commons and her continued engagement with the public, Marlo Thomas exemplifies resilience and a commitment to giving back, honoring not only her late husband but also the children in need of hope and joy at St. Jude’s Research Center. This new chapter in her life reflects her enduring spirit and dedication to making a difference in the lives of others.
