Marlo Thomas Opens Up About Loss on Today as She Promotes St. Jude’s Wing

Marlo Thomas is once again in the public eye following the death of her husband, Phil Donahue, in 2024. In a recent appearance on Today, she opened up about her profound sense of loss. “I miss him a lot,” Thomas expressed while promoting a new wing at the St. Jude’s Research Center, where she serves as National Outreach Director.

The beloved talk show host, Donahue, passed away in August of the previous year at the age of 88. Following his death, Thomas took a step back from public engagements, sharing her decision via an emotional Instagram post. In her message, she acknowledged her need to care for herself and the many individuals who had supported her husband.

During her conversation with the hosts of Today, Thomas, who recently celebrated her own 88th birthday, drew a parallel between her experience and that of Sheinelle Jones, a colleague who lost her husband in May. Jones remarked on the support Thomas provided during her difficult time, calling her “my Earth angel.”

Thomas and Donahue’s marriage spanned 44 years, a remarkable feat in the entertainment industry where relationships often falter. They first met on The Phil Donahue Show, where Thomas recalled their “instant chemistry.” In a segment shared on her YouTube channel, she praised Donahue, saying, “You are wonderful… you are loving and generous and you like women; it’s a pleasure.” The couple tied the knot three years later in 1980 and co-authored a book titled “What Makes a Marriage Last” in 2020, offering insights into their enduring love.

As she honors the legacy of her husband while stepping back into her role at St. Jude’s, Thomas continues to embody resilience and commitment, both in her personal life and professional endeavors.
