Mark Levine has dedicated nearly 25 years of his career to fostering more affordable, equitable, and healthy communities in New York City. His journey began as a bilingual math and science teacher in the South Bronx, and he later founded the Neighborhood Trust Federal Credit Union, which has successfully issued over $100 million in loans to families and small businesses in Northern Manhattan and the South Bronx.
Levine’s commitment to public service led him to serve eight years on the New York City Council, where he held significant roles such as Chair of the Committee on Parks, Chair of the Jewish Caucus, and Chair of the Committee on Health. In his capacity as Health Chair, he adopted a science-based, data-driven strategy to navigate the city through the most severe public health crisis in a century. During this time, he was instrumental in passing significant tenant protections, notably pioneering the nation’s first Right to Counsel law, which ensures legal assistance for tenants facing eviction without the means to hire an attorney.
In 2022, Levine was elected Manhattan Borough President, where he prioritized tackling the city’s ongoing affordability crisis. He worked to create opportunities for tens of thousands of new housing units, promoted policies aimed at expanding affordable housing options, and implemented measures to help tenants keep their homes. His initiatives as Borough President also included a commitment to plant one million additional trees, providing millions of dollars in low-interest loans for small businesses, enhancing the mental health system in the city, improving street safety and mobility, and bolstering New York City’s resilience against climate change.
Levine’s ascent continued with his election as New York City Comptroller in November 2025, officially taking office on January 1, 2026.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Levine enjoys spending quality time with his family and has a passion for languages. He is fluent in Spanish and Hebrew, and is currently expanding his linguistic repertoire by studying Greek and French. He holds a B.A. in physics from Haverford College and a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School.
