The Kansas City Royals have traded right-handed pitcher Brady Singer to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for infielder Jonathan India and outfielder Joey Wiemer. The announcement was made by both teams on Friday.
Brady Singer, 28 years old, had a mixed performance last season, finishing with a record of 9-13 and a 3.71 ERA over 32 games started. He has made a total of 127 starts for Kansas City since his debut, boasting an overall ERA of 4.28. Despite a tougher 2023 season where his ERA climbed to 5.52, he played a key role in the Royals’ surprising playoff run.
Jonathan India, 27, posted a .248 batting average with 15 home runs in the 2024 season while primarily playing second base. A former Rookie of the Year in 2021, he has a solid .764 OPS over four years in the league, with a career-best 21 home runs in his debut season.
Joey Wiemer, who is 25, is moving to his third major league team after starting with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023 and spending the past season with Cincinnati. Over his career, he has maintained a batting average of .201 across 153 games.
This trade addresses critical needs for both franchises. The Royals have been actively seeking to bolster their offense alongside their talented shortstop, Bobby Witt Jr., and with one of the best team ERAs in the league, they can afford to part with a pitcher. The Reds, meanwhile, have struggled with injuries within their starting rotation in recent years and see Singer as a reliable addition that can help stabilize their staff, especially after the departure of Frankie Montas to the Brewers last summer. Notably, Singer also represented Team USA in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, showcasing his talent on a larger stage.
This trade represents a strategic shift for both teams, and fans of both franchises can be optimistic about the potential positive impact of these new additions as they work toward improving their competitive standings in upcoming seasons.
