Magda Linette has opened her season by participating in the WTA 250 tournament in Auckland, where she reached the quarterfinals after defeating notable opponent Venus Williams. However, her journey ended when she faced Alexandra Eala. Following her stint in New Zealand, the Polish tennis player shifted her focus to Australia, entering the WTA 250 event in Hobart.
In her first match in Hobart, Linette faced Oksana Selechmetowa, a qualifier, and it turned out to be a challenging encounter that extended to three sets. Linette managed to secure her victory with scores of 6:3, 1:6, and 6:1.
During the first set, Linette struggled initially but seized the advantage after converting a break point, leading to her securing the set. Despite a strong start in the second set, where she broke her opponent’s serve early, Linette encountered difficulties as Selechmetowa rallied and won a series of games, ultimately taking the set 6:1.
Undeterred by her setbacks, Linette aggressively fought back in the decisive third set, breaking serve at the first opportunity and establishing a commanding lead of 3:0. Further extending her advantage to 5:0, Linette demonstrated her resilience. Although Selechmetowa managed to earn a game, Linette quickly closed the match with three match points on her serve.
Looking ahead, Linette is set to return to the court on January 14 for a previously postponed match against Xinyu Wang, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake. The match is scheduled to begin at the earliest at 8:30 AM.
With her determination and strong performance in Hobart, Linette continues to show promise early in the season, demonstrating her competitive spirit and ability to overcome challenges.
