The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has issued a strong warning to the public against the reckless act of splashing or throwing water at vehicles on the road. This alert comes in the wake of a viral video that depicts children engaging in this dangerous behavior near moving cars, raising serious safety concerns.
LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that such actions create significant risks not only for drivers and passengers but also for the children participating. “Large vehicles, particularly buses, require total focus to ensure safe operation, especially when they are transporting others. A momentary distraction can lead to catastrophic results,” he stated.
Rokosawa pointed out that what might seem like innocent fun can transform into a perilous situation. A driver who is surprised or hindered by water may lose control of the vehicle, endangering their passengers, other road users, and pedestrians alike. He underscored the fact that the children engaging in this behavior are also in great jeopardy.
The CEO explained that actions that disrupt the safe operation of vehicles on public roads can be categorized as offenses under existing regulations, and offenders may face legal repercussions. He urged parents, guardians, and community members to play an active role in educating their children about the hazards associated with play near roadways, particularly during school holidays when children are more likely to be outdoors.
In addition, Rokosawa encouraged motorists to remain calm and attentive when faced with such situations, advising them to respond in ways that do not escalate any potential danger. This call for vigilance seeks to foster a safer environment for both road users and children during these holiday periods.
