LSU-Arkansas Battle for the Boot kicks off under new interim coach

LSU is set to host Arkansas on Saturday morning in the annual Battle for the Boot, with kickoff scheduled for 11:47 a.m. CT on the SEC Network and the LSU Sports Radio Network. Taylor Zarzour, Matt Stinchcomb, and Alyssa Lang will handle the broadcast, while Chris Blair, Jacob Hester, and Gordy Rush will provide radio commentary.

This matchup marks Frank Wilson’s debut as LSU’s interim head coach at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers faced a tough loss last week, falling to Alabama 20-9. Despite the defeat, the defense, led by linebacker Harold Perkins, showcased strength, with Perkins recording a sack, a forced and recovered fumble, along with nine tackles.

Notably, the upcoming game represents only the 17th time that LSU has experienced a pre-noon kickoff at Tiger Stadium. The last occurrence was against Texas A&M on November 25, 2023, where the Tigers emerged victorious in the final collegiate game of Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. Historically, LSU has a solid record of 12-4 in pre-noon games.

“We played the first game in 1901 and in 1924, it became the first trophy game in the SEC,” Wilson stated, emphasizing the historical significance of the LSU-Arkansas rivalry. He reinforced the importance of the contest: “It’s a border war. We have a task in front of us that will require our very best.”

Arkansas enters the game led by quarterback Taylen Green, who has amassed 2,372 passing yards and thrown 19 touchdowns this season. With 649 rushing yards and six touchdowns, Green holds the second position in rushing, trailing running back Mike Washington Jr., who has recorded 828 yards and six touchdowns. Receiver O’Mega Blake has contributed significantly with 661 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

On defense, Arkansas is guided by linebacker Xavian Sorey Jr., who leads the team with 64 tackles, complemented by 1.5 sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble. His teammate, linebacker Stephen Dix Jr., is second with six tackles.

Anticipating the challenge, Wilson remarked, “We’ll have to match their intensity. This week’s preparation has been that of such.” He acknowledged the significance of the Battle for the Golden Boot and how it resonates with the team’s preparation.

Bobby Petrino, an interim coach for Arkansas, is also navigating this historic rivalry. Saturday’s match coincides with LSU’s Military Appreciation Weekend, honoring past and present service members. A USMC F-18 Hornet flyover will take place during the National Anthem, making it a special day for all attendees.

Fans planning to attend are encouraged to stay informed about traffic updates as they make their way to campus, ensuring a smooth experience.
