Minister for Fisheries and Forestry Alitia Bainivalu emphasized the essence of true leadership during the prefect induction ceremony at Nabua Secondary School on Friday. She addressed the newly-appointed leaders, reinforcing the idea that leadership should be rooted in service, responsibility, and compassion, rather than merely holding titles of authority.

Bainivalu encouraged the student leaders to embrace their roles as commitments to support and uplift their peers, rather than as symbols of power. “To lead is not to be above your peers, but to stand with the one who carries the heaviest load,” she remarked, highlighting the importance of character and actions in defining effective leaders.

The minister praised the school’s welcoming atmosphere, noting its inclusive approach that accommodates 535 students, along with an adult learning program that benefits an additional 210 learners. This, she stated, reflects the accessible opportunities available to all members of the community.

Furthermore, Bainivalu urged the students to recognize that leadership extends beyond classroom settings and requires consistent behavior in all aspects of life. As global influences continue to shift, she reminded them of the importance of honoring their cultural identities, viewing tradition as a vital anchor within their communities.

In a hopeful message to the student leaders, the minister concluded by asserting that the choices they make today will play a significant role in shaping the future of Fiji.
