After 42 years, Lautoka’s main bus terminal has finally undergone a significant upgrade. The long-awaited redevelopment, which was completed today, follows several months of closure dedicated to extensive renovations aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and the convenience of commuters.
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa hailed the project as a historic achievement for Fiji’s second-largest city, stating, “It has taken the council 42 years to upgrade this bus station. The old bus station has been replaced with new pavement, and we have also installed 16 new CCTV cameras. The market and unloading bay have been resealed.”
This modernized terminal is set to provide a safer and more efficient transport hub for the thousands of daily users, particularly benefiting students and working families. The project, which was fully funded by local ratepayers, cost nearly $2.8 million with no external borrowing involved.
Tevita Rasoki, Chair of the Lautoka City Council, emphasized the pressing need for this upgrade, reflecting on the previous deteriorating conditions of the terminal. “Throughout the years, the bus stand surface showed signs of deterioration, worsening as time went by. Numerous potholes were an eyesore, some as large as a lovo pit,” he remarked.
Rasoki continued to assert that residents deserved a modern, high-standard bus station that is safe, efficient, and user-friendly. He expressed that this milestone is an opportunity to give back to the people of Lautoka, especially students who are returning to school.
With students set to return to class tomorrow, they will find the fully upgraded terminal, which is expected to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and enhance safety for all commuters. This redevelopment is celebrated as a substantial investment in public transport and urban infrastructure, addressing the city’s growing needs. The improvements demonstrate a commitment to better public services and are anticipated to enhance the overall well-being and accessibility for the community.
