The Lautoka City Council is actively addressing the ongoing challenges posed by fires at the Vunato trash site, challenges aggravated by unauthorized waste picking and difficult environmental conditions. Council chair Taitusi Rasoki emphasized the importance of developing preventative measures in collaboration with stakeholders to enhance safety and operational efficiency at the landfill.
To support these efforts, Rasoki announced plans to enforce restrictions on access to the dump, allowing entry only for authorized personnel and legitimate users. Unauthorized individuals will face legal repercussions as part of the council’s strategy to minimize interference in operations, which has historically heightened fire risks. Recent investigations have highlighted illegal scrap metal salvage attempts as a significant contributing factor to these incidents.
Amid rising health concerns from nearby residents due to the fires, the council is focused on implementing effective fire management strategies. Rasoki explained that the council has mobilized two water trucks and numerous pumps to draw water from canals, alongside deploying a significant workforce to control smoke and manage fires, despite the associated costs and resource pressures on the council.
Compounding the situation are the prevailing dry, windy weather conditions that increase the risk of fires, as well as low tides that limit the use of seawater for firefighting. The council recognizes that these environmental challenges, along with illegal trespassing, complicate their fire control efforts.
Community leaders are voicing similar concerns, urging the development of long-term solutions that improve waste management strategies. The council’s initiatives aim to address immediate fire-related issues while also focusing on sustainable waste management, enhancing recycling efforts, and exploring future landfill alternatives as capacity issues intensify.
