The Lautoka Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with local police authorities, has announced a significant shift in crime trends within the community. While there has been a general decline in serious offenses, public nuisance issues, particularly those associated with alcohol consumption, have seen an increase.
Richard Shafiq, the president of the Lautoka Chamber of Commerce, noted that serious crimes such as break-ins have stabilized, attributing this positive trend to the enhanced police presence in the area. He stated, “At this stage, I could say that the crime rate in Lautoka has been a bit more controlled than previous years. I don’t think there is a crime rate; there are just a lot of drunkards moving around.”
Shafiq emphasized that while Lautoka fares better compared to other urban centers like Suva regarding overall crime rates, local businesses are confronting unique social challenges. He explained, “Yes, there are a lot of drunkards dancing in front of the shops and people sleeping in front of them. That is the only issue we are facing at this moment.”
Despite these challenges, he conveyed optimism about the situation, especially with increased police patrols during the festive season. “In terms of break-ins and burglary, not that much; I think the police patrol is quite high, especially with this festive season. I hope they maintain this way,” he remarked.
Divisional Police Commander West, SSP Iakobo Vaisewa, supported the assertion of an overall decline in crime while highlighting the necessity of community involvement. He expressed gratitude to the public, saying, “It’s a general reduction, and I continue to thank the members of the public for their support. I can feel their understanding in them taking ownership of their own security.”
Vaisewa also reaffirmed the police’s dedication to managing public intoxication and disorderly behavior, underscoring strict enforcement of regulations regarding alcohol and drug offenses in public areas. He referenced recent arrests related to public intoxication and minor drug offenses, demonstrating the department’s proactive approach to maintaining community order.
Through the ongoing collaboration between local business leaders and law enforcement, there is a cautious optimism that Lautoka can navigate its current challenges while building on the positive trend of decreased serious crime. The joint efforts of the community and the police may lead to a more secure environment, fostering a supportive atmosphere for both businesses and residents as they approach the festive season.
