Residents of the Lau Islands are raising alarm over unreliable shipping schedules and inadequate wharf infrastructure, which are severely impacting their daily lives. With only five functioning ports accommodating the 19 islands, the transportation of people and essential goods is significantly hampered.
These logistical challenges have resulted in persistent hardships for the community that depends heavily on sea transport for its survival. Safaira Tagivuni, a spokesperson for Lau Women, emphasized that current shipping services fall short, as they only arrive once a month. She pointed out the negative consequences of these delays, stating, “Ships are delayed or don’t arrive, which affects everything: our access to medical care, our children’s education, and even the transport of food and building materials.”
Furthermore, Tagivuni voiced her worries regarding the deteriorating condition of the jetties, complicating the situation further for residents. These issues were highlighted during the National Rural Development Plan consultation, which aimed to engage the community in addressing pressing matters influencing their way of life. This initiative seeks to explore solutions that align with the diverse needs of the populace while encouraging sustainable development in the region.
