The celebration of linguistic diversity and cultural unity took center stage yesterday as 49 participants took part in an International Mother Language Day community run organized by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). The event underscored the profound connection between language, identity, and heritage.
High Commissioner Sumeet Mehta emphasized the crucial role of language in shaping individual identities and fostering cultural connections. He remarked, “Our mother language carries our memories, our values, and our traditions,” asserting that it is through our first language that we learn to communicate, think, and express our emotions.
Highlighting India’s linguistic richness, Mr. Mehta noted that the Constitution recognizes 22 scheduled languages alongside numerous dialects, showcasing the nation’s remarkable cultural mosaic. He stated, “From Hindi to Tamil, Bengali to Gujarati, Punjabi, and Urdu, each language embodies a rich culture and heritage. This diversity does not divide us; rather, it strengthens us and reflects our enduring principle of unity in diversity.”
Drawing a parallel with Fiji, Mr. Mehta pointed out that the coexistence of iTaukei, Fiji Hindi, English, and other languages has created a vibrant national identity. He emphasized that Fiji Hindi represents a powerful symbol of shared history and resilience, highlighting the significance of the Girmitiyas’ journey in shaping the cultural identity of the nation.
The High Commissioner also affirmed the ICCR’s dedication to promoting linguistic and cultural wellness through various educational and cultural initiatives. He explained that organizing a community run serves to highlight the connection between language and mental engagement, while physical activity nurtures the body—both essential for cultivating a thriving society.
This event not only celebrated the richness of languages but also promoted community engagement and appreciation for cultural heritage, reinforcing the vital understanding that diversity is a source of strength and unity in society.
