The situation regarding the roads in Labasa has become critically concerning, with potholes described by Mahen Prasad, chair of the Labasa Taxi Association, as resembling large lovo pits. He brought attention to how these extensive road damages have escalated from being mere inconveniences to significant safety risks for all road users, including motorists, pedestrians, and public transport operators.
Mr. Prasad outlined the hazards associated with these sizeable potholes, particularly during nighttime or heavy rainfall when they become difficult to see. Numerous drivers have reported suffering damage to their vehicles after hitting these hazardous spots, leading to issues with suspension systems, tires, and wheel alignments. Some taxi operators have been forced to remove their vehicles from service for repairs, resulting in financial losses and delays for their passengers.
Moreover, he pointed out that roads previously repaired by contractors have failed to hold up, with patched areas deteriorating within weeks. The ongoing adverse weather conditions are worsening the situation, rendering travel in and around Labasa increasingly dangerous and uncomfortable.
In light of these concerns, the Fiji Roads Authority has recognized that the current wet weather has severely impacted road conditions in Labasa and the broader northern region. They noted that the rural road network is especially at risk, dealing with persistent potholes due to heavy rainfall. Areas susceptible to flooding and low-level crossings have experienced washouts, complicating navigation.
Regarding funding for road maintenance and pothole remediation, the Fiji Roads Authority stated that their budget is reliant on government allocations, with resources distributed to each division according to their annual work program.
Despite these ongoing challenges, there is optimism that through heightened awareness and continued communication between the community and local authorities, effective solutions can be found to enhance road safety in Labasa.
