Farmers in Labasa are taking proactive steps to assist families facing the rising cost of living this Christmas by ensuring that the price of dalo remains affordable. Jona Lolo, a farmer from Naviavia in Cakaudrove, has pointed out that the increasing costs of goods significantly impact urban families. In response to these challenges, local farmers have committed to lowering dalo prices to provide some relief during the festive season.
At present, dalo prices in Labasa are quite competitive, ranging from five to forty dollars, and the produce is selling out quickly due to high demand. Lolo reassured local residents that, despite market fluctuations where prices can sometimes exceed fifty dollars, the commitment of farmers to their community remains strong. He emphasized the need for empathy and understanding during these challenging times, stating, “Everything is about consideration, and we as farmers understand what people are going through and the challenges they face. So don’t worry about the price.”
Another farmer, Iliesa Tulaba, shared a similar perspective, acknowledging the hard work and dedication required in farming while also highlighting the joy it brings him. He enjoys his role in providing fresh and affordable dalo to the community, stating, “For me, this is something I look forward to — waking up early, traveling long distances, and providing fresh and affordable dalo to customers this Christmas.”
Additionally, local authorities are taking extra measures to ensure a safe holiday season for shoppers. Police are actively monitoring the Labasa Market area, as well as bus and taxi stands, to promote safety and encourage responsible celebrations.
The collaborative efforts of the farmers to maintain low prices, alongside enhanced safety measures, aim to create a joyful atmosphere and alleviate financial pressures during the holiday season, showcasing the strength and solidarity of the Labasa community. This collective spirit not only helps families during tough economic times but also fosters a sense of togetherness as the community celebrates Christmas.
