The Labasa Bridge is set for extensive construction work that may take between two to three years, as announced by Jacqueline Hughes, managing director of PLANIT Pacific Ltd. During a public consultation held at the Labasa Civic Centre, Hughes emphasized that the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is committed to methodically assessing construction techniques. The goal is to deliver the project efficiently while minimizing any potential environmental and social impacts.

Hughes highlighted the importance of the construction methodology in determining which contractor will be awarded the project. She noted that this process would involve implementing measures to safeguard the environment and support local communities throughout the construction period.

Acknowledging the size of the project, she urged patience from stakeholders, stating, “This is not a six-month project. The construction phase will take at least two to three years, depending on weather conditions.” The necessary relocation of utilities may lead to temporary disruptions in services, which utility providers will need to account for in their planning.

To alleviate concerns, Hughes reassured residents that access to rivers and riverside areas would remain available whenever feasible, with temporary waterway access factored into the construction strategy. Furthermore, she introduced a formal grievance mechanism designed for residents affected by the construction. This process will enable them to submit complaints, with initial reviews anticipated within two weeks, followed by resolution outcomes delivered in an additional two weeks. If issues remain unresolved, a second review will be conducted over the course of four weeks.

This bridge upgrade is part of a broader nationwide initiative aimed at enhancing 40 critical bridges along with three maritime structures throughout Fiji, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure across the region. The careful planning and community engagement demonstrated in this project reflect an optimistic approach toward development and progress.
