Rosette Andrews Singh, a 56-year-old grandmother, is making her mark at the Korovou market as a seller of grog and fresh produce, despite facing significant health challenges, including just two percent kidney function. For the past two decades, Rosette has displayed remarkable resolve and vitality, especially over the last three years as she grapples with her condition.
Rosette acknowledges the difficulties posed by her health issues but is determined not to let them dictate her life. “I usually go for my dialysis and then I’m back in the market,” she stated, highlighting her commitment to staying active and engaged rather than succumbing to her illness. Originally from Kasavu, Rosette relocated to Korovou after marriage, where her professional journey began after her education at Gospel High School. She successfully worked her way up from a cashier at Morris Hedstrom to branch manager before deciding to focus more on her family.
Three years ago, her life took a dramatic turn when she fell ill. What initially seemed like a short illness quickly escalated, revealing severe health issues, including dangerously high blood pressure and deteriorating kidneys. Although the option of a kidney transplant was discussed during her hospital stay, Rosette chose to rely on her faith, stating, “If God allowed me to get this sickness, I have to accept it.”
Having begun dialysis treatment in January 2023, Rosette faces the financial implications of her care with the help of her children and government support. She balances her medical needs with her responsibilities as a vendor, emphasizing that her business is essential for her family’s livelihood and for funding her children’s education.
As the festive season approaches, Rosette encourages others to focus on their health. She stresses the importance of a balanced diet, particularly in a time when many face health issues like heart disease and diabetes. “If you love your family, remember to take care of your health; it’s the best gift you can give them,” she advised.
