Konnor Griffin announced himself in emphatic fashion in his major-league debut, ripping an RBI double that sparked a four-run second inning and helped the Pittsburgh Pirates hold off the Baltimore Orioles 5-4 in Friday’s home opener at PNC Park. The 19-year-old’s breakout moment came against Orioles starter Kyle Bradish and set the tone in a game in which Pittsburgh’s offense rallied early and weathered a late Baltimore push.

The decisive rally unfolded in the bottom of the second. Griffin delivered the initial blow with an RBI double off Bradish, and Jared Triolo followed with a base hit to right that chased the rookie right-hander from the game and brought Griffin across the plate. The Pirates added two more runs in the frame — Henry Davis doubled to left to drive in a run and Oneil Cruz singled home another — turning an early deficit into a 4-0 lead.

Mitch Keller settled into the win for Pittsburgh despite a scare in the fifth. Baltimore finally got to Keller in that inning when Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman each ripped RBI doubles to cut the margin to 4-2. Keller departed with the lead intact and was credited with the victory, improving to 1-0, while Bradish absorbed the loss to fall to 0-2.

Pittsburgh stretched its advantage to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Ryan O’Hearn delivered a sacrifice fly off Dietrich Enns. The Orioles kept battling: Taylor Ward doubled home Blaze Alexander in the seventh off reliever Yohan Ramírez to make it a two-run game, and Henderson once again threatened late by homering with two outs in the ninth off Gregory Soto, trimming the deficit to 5-4. Soto recorded the final outs to preserve the one-run win.

Griffin’s debut was the headline, not just for the timing of his hit but for what it signaled to a fan base that has watched the club invest heavily in top young talent. The 19-year-old shortstop entered the season as one of baseball’s most highly regarded prospects and his immediate contribution in Pittsburgh’s home opener added weight to high expectations surrounding his arrival.

The victory improved the Pirates to 4-3 on the young season, while the Orioles dropped to 3-4. Beyond Griffin’s dramatic entrance, the game featured contributions across both lineups and showcased a bullpen battle late, with Pittsburgh’s relievers holding on after the offense’s second-inning outburst.
