Kolisi Targets Breakdown Battle as Springboks Unveil New Look for Italy Test

South Africa’s rugby captain, Siya Kolisi, has emphasized the Springboks’ focus on the breakdown as they get ready to take on Italy in Turin tonight. The fixture is crucial as it comes on the heels of Italy’s strong performance during their July tour of South Africa, where they presented significant challenges for the Springboks, despite South Africa prevailing in the first Test with a score of 42–24.

Kolisi noted that Italy’s recent 26–19 victory over Australia underlines their current strength in this area. He expressed that the team has spent a considerable amount of time preparing to handle Italy’s breakdown prowess, recognizing that careful ball management will be key to their success in the match.

In preparation for this clash, the Springboks have introduced 11 changes from their previous lineup, which defeated France 32–17. This rotation allows new players the opportunity to make their mark ahead of the pivotal matchup against Ireland on November 22. Among the new faces is 22-year-old Ethan Hooker, who will transition from wing to inside center, partnering with 23-year-old Canan Moodie in the midfield. Kolisi expressed his confidence in Hooker, commending his enthusiasm for rugby and physical readiness to face tough competition.

The match against Italy is set to kick off at 9 PM local time in Turin, and it carries the added weight of being part of the Autumn International series. As the Springboks aim to maintain momentum and build depth in their squad leading into future competitions, Kolisi’s leadership and tactical focus will be crucial for their performance against the Azzurri. This serves not just as an opportunity for new talents to shine, but also as a stepping stone toward future challenges, reinforcing the team’s long-term vision and aspirations.
