Kolisi says Vermeulen ready to step up as Springboks chase five-from-five vs Wales

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi expressed confidence in Duane Vermeulen’s readiness to step onto the field against Wales, following a rigorous training week. Kolisi noted that despite being without several key players due to World Rugby’s window, Vermeulen, a former No 8 and current mobi-unit coach, stood ready to make an impact should the need arise.

Coach Rassie Erasmus indicated that the team is “two injuries away” from calling Vermeulen up for action. Kolisi highlighted Vermeulen’s physicality and intensity during training, stating, “It’s great to have him as a coach, but it’s not so nice having to play against him in training.” He humorously remarked on Vermeulen’s aggressive approach, likening him to “Thor” for his powerful presence on the field.

While Wales is currently facing challenges of its own, with 13 first-choice players released to their clubs, Kolisi insisted that the Springboks will not underestimate their opponents. The Welsh team has recently struggled, with significant losses to Argentina and New Zealand, and only managing to edge past Japan recently. Kolisi reminded everyone that South Africa has historically had a tough record against Wales, characterizing the Test as anything but a formality.

Kolisi reflected on Wales’ current difficulties, noting that every team experiences cycles of rebuilding. He shared that the Springboks themselves have learned from similar situations, recalling their struggles in 2015 when many senior players retired concurrently. He praised the value of growing their squad depth through continuous changes, stating, “The coach never says, ‘It’s OK if we lose.’ We want to win and build squad depth.”

The top-ranked Springboks are aiming for a triumphant finish to their tour with hopes of achieving a perfect five-from-five after impressive victories over France and Ireland along with wins against Italy and Les Bleus, despite facing adversity with red cards. Kolisi recognized the team’s resilience, crediting their ability to adapt to various challenges, including suspensions. He stated, “The way we adjusted, listened and adapted without making excuses was big for us.”

As the Springboks prepare for this vital match in Cardiff, their experiences over the tour have not only tested their skill but also strengthened their camaraderie and strategy, aspiring to conclude the season on a high note with a focus on their game performance.
