A shocking incident occurred at Suva’s Millers’ Wharf early yesterday morning, where a security officer was threatened at knifepoint during a brazen robbery. Paula Vale, who has dedicated six years to his role as a security guard at the wharf, found himself in a life-threatening situation when masked assailants entered a shipping company just after 2 a.m.

CCTV footage captured the disturbing moment when the intruders approached Vale. He recalled standing his ground and inquiring about their intentions when one of the masked men ordered him to enter the guard room. “Get inside or we will attack you with this knife,” they warned. Vale, overwhelmed with fear, complied and was subsequently tied up and forced to lie down as the robbers executed their plan.

“I almost thought I was going to get killed,” Vale said, noting that it was the first time he had ever faced such a serious threat to his life. With their identities concealed, the intruders were unrecognizable to him. Vale reported that the harrowing ordeal lasted around nine to ten minutes, during which the suspects made off with a safe from the premises. He overheard them indicating the safe was “on top,” but was unaware of what it contained or its value.

The psychological effects of the incident have deeply troubled Vale, leaving him sleepless as he continues to relive the terrifying experience. This was an unprecedented situation for him during his tenure at the wharf.

In a positive turn of events following the robbery, local police announced that one suspect has been apprehended and investigations are ongoing to locate the remaining individuals involved. Authorities have also revealed that the stolen safe was taken aboard a fiberglass boat, highlighting an organized escape plan by the robbers.

This incident underscores the critical need for enhanced security measures in public areas and emphasizes the ongoing community efforts required to support individuals like Vale, who play a vital role in safeguarding these spaces.
