The New York Knicks are setting their sights on two players from the New Orleans Pelicans as the trade deadline approaches. Reports from SNY’s Ian Begley reveal that the Knicks are particularly interested in guard Jose Alvarado and center Yves Missi.
Alvarado has previously been identified as a target for the Knicks, with James L. Edwards III of The Athletic highlighting the interest earlier this month. Known for his tenacity and defensive skills, the 27-year-old has showcased his capability over his five seasons with the Pelicans. This season, he has been averaging 7.9 points, 3.2 assists, and 2.7 rebounds in approximately 22 minutes per game, shooting an impressive 41.5 percent from the field and 35.6 percent from the three-point range. Notably, with Alvarado on the court, the Pelicans maintain a defensive rating of 112.3, a significant improvement over the 119.7 rating when he is absent.
The Knicks are in need of bolstering their perimeter defense, which has seen inconsistencies this season despite the presence of strong wing defenders like OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges. Backup point guard Miles McBride has shown defensive capability but is currently sidelined due to an ankle injury, putting added pressure on the team’s defense.
In addition to Alvarado, Knicks’ interest also extends to center Yves Missi, who has garnered attention from several teams, including the Indiana Pacers. It is anticipated that acquiring Missi may require substantial draft capital. The 21-year-old center has been averaging 5.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game off the bench. His performance has been solid, shooting 54.0 percent from the field, though he has not fully established a more prominent role with the Pelicans, considering the competition from teammates like Zion Williamson and Derik Queen. With two years remaining on his rookie deal, Missi’s potential could provide great value for the Knicks.
As the Knicks navigate the trade deadline, the possibility of acquiring both Alvarado and Missi could enhance their roster and improve their defensive capabilities moving forward.
