The recent local body elections in Kerala have resulted in a significant setback for the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), while the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has shown remarkable strength by leading in four out of six municipal bodies and 14 district panchayats. In contrast, the ruling coalition managed to secure just six district panchayats.
In a surprising twist, the BJP has emerged as a formidable player in these elections, winning 50 seats in the 101-member municipal corporation of Thiruvananthapuram. This victory marks a historic achievement for the party in Kerala, which had previously only won one local assembly seat and became notable for winning its first Lok Sabha seat in the state last year. The Thiruvananthapuram municipality was previously regarded as a stronghold of the Left, with the CPI(M) holding 51 seats until now.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi heralded the results as a “watershed moment” for Kerala’s political landscape, attributing the gain to the dedicated efforts of BJP workers. In a statement made on social media, he expressed gratitude to the people of Thiruvananthapuram and emphasized the party’s commitment to fostering growth and improving the quality of life for residents in the city.
BJP Kerala president Rajeev Chandrasekhar commented on the electoral outcome, proclaiming it as the end of the road for the Left in Kerala. He voiced confidence in the party’s projection of achieving a considerable vote share, previously aiming for 25%, and expected to surpass 20%.
The BJP’s success was not limited to the capital. The party maintained its control of the Palakkad municipality for a third consecutive term and delivered a noteworthy blow to the LDF by narrowly winning in the Tripunithura municipality with 21 wards against the ruling coalition, which acquired 20.
Shashi Tharoor, the sitting Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, congratulated both the UDF and the BJP for their performances, suggesting that these results indicate notable changes in the local political arena. His acknowledgment of the BJP’s success in Thiruvananthapuram reflects a possibly evolving political sentiment among the electorate and hints at shifting allegiances.
