Former New York Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka has been appointed to join the Detroit Lions’ coaching staff as a high-ranking offensive assistant, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero. This move marks a fresh start for Kafka as he aims to enhance the Lions’ offensive strategies.
The Lions have recently restructured their offensive coaching staff, hiring Drew Petzing as the new offensive coordinator following the dismissal of John Morton. Although Kafka’s specific title is still undisclosed, he is expected to collaborate closely with Petzing to revitalize the Lions’ offense for the upcoming season.
At 38, Kafka brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served as the Giants’ offensive coordinator in 2022 after a substantial tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs under head coach Andy Reid. He stepped in as interim head coach for the Giants midway through the 2025 season, where he recorded a 2-5 win-loss record over the final seven games. Kafka was also a candidate for the Giants’ permanent head coach position, which ultimately went to John Harbaugh, and he engaged in discussions with the Philadelphia Eagles regarding their offensive coordinator vacancy.
The Lions finished the 2025 season with a record of 9-8, narrowly missing the playoffs but showcasing a potent offense that ranked fourth in scoring and fifth in total yards, a testament to the effectiveness of their previous offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson, who has since taken the head coach position with the Chicago Bears.
As Kafka steps into his new role, he brings potential for significant contributions to the Lions’ offensive development, creating an optimistic outlook for the team’s performance in the forthcoming season.
