Government teams operating in remote areas are being urged to utilize their resources effectively while ensuring that their efforts genuinely benefit communities. This call to action was emphasized by Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources, Paula Cirikiyasawa, during a meeting with staff from the Geological Surveys and Geological Services Divisions in Kadavu.
Cirikiyasawa highlighted that efficient service delivery is critical and that teams should strive to extend beyond their initial tasks to better cater to local needs. His visit included assessments of groundwater development projects at Yawe District School and Nalotu Village, which aim to enhance water security for over 150 individuals, including villagers, students, and teachers. Additionally, he inspected the Korovulavula Heights quarry, a vital source for materials used in road maintenance and upgrades throughout the island.
The Geological Survey Division is making progress on two significant programs in the Western and Central parts of Kadavu. The first program involves preliminary mapping and verifying potential hard-rock locations, while the second is focused on identifying unreported landslide sites to bolster national land-use planning. This year, Kadavu has been designated as a priority area for these initiatives, with consultations currently taking place and fieldwork set to commence soon.
This proactive approach aligns with the government’s ongoing development efforts in Kadavu, which emphasize the importance of infrastructure, welfare, and community safety. Recently, a multi-agency outreach led by the Minister for Policing included listening sessions with residents, helping to shape a long-term development plan aimed at improving living standards and addressing local challenges.
