Government teams operating in remote areas are being encouraged to optimize resource utilization while ensuring that their efforts genuinely benefit the communities they serve. This call to action was highlighted by Paula Cirikiyasawa, the Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources, during a recent meeting with staff from the Geological Surveys and Geological Services Divisions in Kadavu.
Cirikiyasawa stressed the importance of efficient service delivery, urging teams to go beyond their initial responsibilities to better meet local requirements. His visit included evaluations of groundwater development projects at Yawe District School and Nalotu Village, aimed at improving water security for more than 150 individuals, including residents, students, and teachers. He also assessed the Korovulavula Heights quarry, a crucial source of materials for road maintenance and upgrades across the island.
The Geological Survey Division is advancing two notable programs in the Western and Central regions of Kadavu. The first initiative involves preliminary mapping and validation of potential hard-rock sites, while the second targets the identification of unreported landslide areas to enhance national land-use planning. This year, Kadavu has been prioritized for these efforts, with consultations ongoing and fieldwork set to begin shortly.
This proactive strategy aligns with the government’s broader development initiatives in Kadavu, emphasizing infrastructure, community welfare, and safety.
