Farmers are expressing growing concerns regarding inadequate post-harvest planning and limited market access, which significantly impacts their ability to sell produce at fair prices. This situation is directly affecting the income levels that farmers can derive from their crops.

Petero Uluinaceva, a kava farmer, highlights the competitive nature of the kava industry, noting that both the quality and value of kava have risen over the years. Despite facing challenges, he underscores the resilience and adaptability of farmers in Kadavu, who are modifying their strategies to thrive in the evolving kava market.

“I have always promised myself that once I retire, I want to live in Suva and sell my Yaqona. The prices have increased over the years, which is a huge benefit for the business,” Uluinaceva stated. His recent move to Suva was motivated by the desire to establish his business and support his family effectively.

While farmers encounter obstacles related to market access and post-harvest planning, many kava growers are responding positively by diversifying their products and engaging in direct sales to consumers. This adaptability not only enhances their income opportunities but also fosters a sense of hope within the farming community.
