Jerry O’Connell has shared his remarkable journey to quit smoking after a struggle with nicotine that lasted for decades. The 52-year-old actor revealed that he has been smoke-free for 14 years, largely thanks to a $800 investment in hypnosis back in 2012.
During a recent appearance on the Work in Progress podcast with host Sophia Bush, O’Connell spoke candidly about his battle with smoking and the push from his wife, actress Rebecca Romijn. He recalled that after enduring years of nicotine addiction, he was ultimately motivated to quit when Rebecca made an ultimatum: she would refrain from physical contact until he stopped smoking. This challenge, initially perceived as a joke, quickly became serious as O’Connell faced a two-month contact drought, prompting him to take action.
His decision to seek hypnosis arose after speaking with a friend who had successfully quit smoking through the same method. He described how he met with a hypnotist, bringing along a photo of his family for motivation. The session involved relaxing music and counting down, during which O’Connell feared he had wasted his money, thinking the experience was futile.
However, the results were far from what he expected. Despite holding a pack of cigarettes and feeling a strong urge to smoke afterward, he found himself unable to light a cigarette, a feeling he attributes to the effectiveness of the hypnosis.
O’Connell’s story highlights the potential of unconventional methods, like hypnosis, to help those struggling with addiction. His success serves as a testament to the power of determination and the influence of loved ones in overcoming challenges. With over a decade smoke-free, O’Connell now enjoys a healthier lifestyle, which is surely a triumph both for him and his family.
