Netflix has announced the production of a new comedy film that revolves around the intriguing saga of a lost password to a cryptocurrency wallet, holding assets valued at an impressive $35 million. This film creatively intertwines the humorous aspects of romantic comedy with the increasingly relevant theme of cryptocurrency, inspired by real-life tales of individuals who lost access to their digital riches.
Jennifer Garner will take on the lead role and also serve as a producer on the project, which is currently tentatively titled “One Last Attempt” or “One Attempt Remaining.” The official release date is yet to be announced. The storyline follows a divorced couple who, upon discovering that the cryptocurrency they won during a cruise has appreciated significantly over the years, realize that they are unable to access the wallet due to a forgotten password. With just 48 hours to regain access, the situation becomes urgent, as failure to do so could result in losing their assets due to regulatory requirements from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Producing the film are notable figures Sean Levy and Dan Levin from 21 Laps, along with Nicole King from Linden Productions. Garner’s participation in the film marks another addition to her repertoire of romantic comedies, known for her memorable roles in beloved films like “13 Going on 30” and “Juno.”
The film draws from genuine experiences of those who have found themselves in similar predicaments concerning cryptocurrency. One poignant example is Stefan Thomas, the former CTO of Ripple, who lost access to a hard drive containing 7,002 BTC—an amount that, as of today, would have been worth around $640 million. The hard drive, equipped with a self-destruct feature after multiple incorrect password attempts, presents a cautionary tale about the perils of cryptocurrency possession. Similarly, James Howells, an IT professional from Wales, finds himself unable to access 8,000 BTC that he mined on his laptop, which ended up buried in a landfill, leading to contested legal options for recovery.
Despite the emergence of cryptocurrency in popular culture over the past 15 years, cinematic representations remain relatively sparse. Previously released films and documentaries touching on this subject include “Money Plane” (2020), “Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King” (2022), Netflix’s “Biggest Heist Ever” (2024), and the upcoming “Going Infinite,” which recounts the downfall of FTX and its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried.
This new film promises to reveal how the complexities of cryptocurrency ownership intersect with personal stories, showcasing the emotional stakes involved in the digital age. As anticipation builds around this project—especially among fans of both cryptocurrency narratives and contemporary cinema—its unique blend of humor and urgency offers a fresh perspective on the evolving landscape of technology and finance.
