Emergency responders successfully rescued a man and a young child from a Jeep that had become submerged in floodwater near Fashion Valley in San Diego on New Year’s Day morning.
The San Diego Lifeguard Swift Water Rescue team was deployed to the scene following heavy rains that led to significant flooding in the area, described by San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokeswoman Candace Hadley as akin to “a river.” The flooding was particularly severe in the Avenida Del Rio section of Fashion Valley.
Hadley reported that the adult and child were trapped in their vehicle due to rapidly rising waters in Mission Valley. Their identities and ages have not been disclosed.
In light of the incident, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department urged residents to stay away from flooded areas. “Take safety precautions seriously,” Hadley emphasized, warning that even a small amount of moving water can pose serious risks. She noted that just six inches of swiftly flowing water can knock over an adult, while a foot of water can result in vehicles being swept away.
Residents who find themselves stranded in their vehicles were advised against attempting to drive through the water or exit the vehicle. Instead, they should call 911 to receive assistance from rescue crews.
As flooding can be unpredictable, the department reinforced the importance of storm preparedness and safety, recommending that those in flood-prone areas keep informed and listen for alerts from local authorities.
