Japan is set to kick off its defense of the World Baseball Classic championship this Friday against Taiwan. The prestigious tournament features 20 teams split into four pools, with Japan placed in Pool C alongside Taiwan, South Korea, Australia, and the Czech Republic. This highly anticipated match marks Japan’s inaugural game in the preliminary round, and only the top two teams from each pool will advance to the quarterfinals.

Team Japan boasts an impressive roster, featuring a record eight Major League Baseball players. Notably, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yamamoto Yoshinobu is scheduled to start against Taiwan. Japan’s manager, Ibata Hirokazu, expressed confidence in Yamamoto’s readiness during a Wednesday news conference, stating that he is in excellent condition and prepared to deliver pitches at full speed.

In this tournament, two-way star Ohtani Shohei from the Dodgers will contribute only as a batter. Despite struggling to secure hits during preparatory friendly games prior to the WBC, Ohtani remains optimistic about his physical state, emphasizing that he is injury-free and feeling fit. Additionally, Boston Red Sox player Yoshida Masataka and Chicago Cubs’ Suzuki Seiya showcased their power during the friendly matches by hitting home runs.

With a strong lineup and competitive spirit, Japan is eager to defend its title and make a significant run in the tournament. The excitement surrounding the match against Taiwan not only sets the stage for the games ahead but also reinforces the passion for baseball in Japan as they strive for another championship.
