JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In a heartbreaking incident, an 18-year-old was fatally shot and another individual injured in a double shooting at a Burger King on Blanding Boulevard late Saturday night. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that 28-year-old Dawud Burritt has been arrested and is facing charges, including murder, in connection with the tragic event.
Detectives allege that Burritt shot and killed Matthew Jackson, while also injuring another man before fleeing the scene. Initially, police provided medical assistance to the victims; however, Jackson succumbed to his injuries, while the other victim was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover.
The loss of Jackson has deeply affected students at Riverside High School, where he was remembered fondly by classmates. James Calvo, who shared a classroom with Jackson, expressed his shock and sadness over the news, describing Jackson as a cool classmate whose presence left a positive impression on him. “It really took effect on me… he was always very cool to be around,” Calvo shared.
The response from the community highlights a growing concern over violence. Local resident Davetra lamented the escalating aggression in society, pondering the trivial triggers that can lead to such tragic outcomes. “First of all, life is short. The world is going crazy, and I feel like people are raging over just the smallest thing… it wasn’t necessary,” she stated.
In honor of their classmate, students at Riverside High School are coming together to hold a campus-wide prayer meeting. Calvo detailed the planned event, where he and fellow students will stand in solidarity with Jackson’s family, offering prayers for both them and the community during this difficult time.
As investigations continue, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has not yet disclosed the circumstances that led to the shooting. The community remains in mourning as they process this senseless tragedy.
