MILAN — Team USA’s speed skaters faced a tough defeat against Italy in the men’s team pursuit at the 2026 Winter Olympics on February 17, resulting in a silver medal finish for the Americans. What added to the social media buzz surrounding the race was the taunting celebration by Italian skater Andrea Giovannini, who performed a night-night gesture reminiscent of NBA star Steph Curry.

Interestingly, American skater Emery Lehman expressed that he and his teammates did not initially notice the taunt. He humorously remarked, “No, we didn’t see that. It’s better than getting two middle fingers from the Russians four years ago,” referencing a previous encounter with Russia at the 2022 Olympics where tensions flared.

Casey Dawson, another member of the U.S. team, took a more gracious approach, acknowledging Italy’s celebration: “Hey, they’re celebrating. They put in the work. Good for them.” This response showcased sportsmanship from the Americans despite the disappointment of missing out on gold, as they had dedicated seven years to train together for this moment.

The fierce competition unfolded over eight laps on the 400-meter track at the Milano Speed Skating Stadium. Italy’s celebratory gesture by Giovannini was part of a joyful moment in their victory. “I’m a super fan of the NBA,” Giovannini shared, revealing his inspiration behind the celebration. His lighthearted spirit resonated in his statement, “If I win tomorrow, I will make the night night. I did it, and I enjoyed it.”

Adding to the humor, Ethan Cepuran, the third member of the U.S. team, entered the post-event press conference looking weary and commented, “Just looking forward to a nap,” perhaps hinting at their exhaustive efforts on the ice.

While the defeat stings for Team USA, their gracious reaction in the face of disappointment exemplifies the true spirit of the Olympics—celebrating athletic achievement and camaraderie across nations.
