The Government of Fiji is stepping up its efforts to ensure that essential services are made accessible to remote communities, with a recently executed outreach program in Matacawalevu, Nacula, located in the Yasawa Islands. This critical initiative was led by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and involved collaboration with various agencies, including the Ministry of Employment Productivity and Workplace Relations, the Ministry of Commerce and Business Development, the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, and the Fiji Police Force.
During this community-centric event, locals were provided with direct access to a variety of vital services right in their village. The offerings included youth group registrations, new Joint ID Cards issuance, cooperative business registrations, enrollment opportunities at the National Employment Centre, along with HIV testing and counseling services.
Jese Saukuru, the Minister for Youth and Sports, highlighted the significance of ensuring that services are accessible to maritime communities. He stressed that geographical barriers should not impede individuals’ ability to access governmental support and opportunities.
Minister Saukuru raised urgent concerns about the rising numbers of HIV cases among young people and the worrying increase in drug use in rural villages. He urged for increased awareness and collaborative efforts to protect the health and well-being of the youth and young adults in these communities.
This outreach effort reflects the government’s dedication to providing equitable services while aiming to build healthier and more resilient communities across Fiji. Such initiatives not only enhance the quality of life for residents in remote areas but also symbolize a proactive approach to addressing critical health and socio-economic issues.
