The Charlotte Hornets have faced significant challenges since drafting LaMelo Ball in 2020, compiling a disappointing record of 152-277 over that span. Although Ball has made an impact with his skills, his on-court presence has not been enough to reverse the team’s fortunes, with his own record sitting at 104 wins to 146 losses in the NBA.
The struggles of the Hornets can’t be attributed solely to one player. Historically, the team has lacked depth and talent, compounded by injuries to key players, including Ball himself. Moreover, the organization has not consistently demonstrated a winning culture, further complicating the situation.
Recently, NBA legend Isiah Thomas suggested an unconventional reason for the Hornets’ struggles: the likability of LaMelo Ball. He commented, “Does he want to entertain and be a fun guy, or does he want to win? Right now, he’s an entertainer, a fun guy. We love him; everybody likes him.” Thomas implied that Ball’s popularity among players may somehow hinder the team’s success.
While the modern NBA does indeed feature a more congenial atmosphere among players, the notion that a player’s likability could be a reason for losing is questionable at best. The Hornets’ issues are rooted in longstanding problems such as poor roster decisions, injury setbacks, and a history of organizational difficulties rather than the character of their star player.
There remains potential for growth, however. With an improved roster and a hint of better health, the Hornets are in a position to reverse their fortunes. The idea that winning and fun cannot coexist seems outdated; many successful teams have found ways to combine both elements. As the Hornets continue to develop, they may discover that a positive team atmosphere can coexist with a fierce competitive drive, leading them toward better results in the future.
