DETROIT — Fans of the Michigan State Spartans had hoped for a more successful 2025 season under head coach Jonathan Smith, aiming for growth and bowl eligibility by securing at least six wins. Unfortunately, the team’s performance led to an eight-game losing streak, resulting in increased calls for change among the fanbase.
As college football programs around them either support their current coaches or search for new ones, Michigan State remains quiet. This lack of communication has led to growing concerns among fans about the future direction of the program. Royal Oak resident Landon Ferris expressed the urgent need for decisive action, highlighting the importance of stability for both recruits and current players.
Despite their team’s struggles, fans remain committed and enthusiastic, turning out to support the Spartans in their final game against Maryland at Ford Field. Some were lucky enough to secure complimentary tickets, as both teams are positioned at the bottom of the Big Ten conference. However, uncertainty looms over the future of the Spartans, with many fans expressing hopes for new leadership by next season. Kevin Youngblood, an MSU graduate, suggested it may be time to part ways with Smith to chart a new path for the program.
The season had begun positively for Smith, with a 3-0 start in his first year. However, the team faltered, winning only two out of their final nine games in 2024 and struggling through the 2025 season without a conference victory. This lack of progress has left many fans feeling disillusioned.
“I feel like there’s been no trend upwards,” Ferris noted, criticizing the lack of year-over-year improvement. “If he’s not going to improve, well, what’s he doing here?”
As the Spartans aim to avoid their first winless season in Big Ten play since 1958 against Maryland, many fans feel that a loss to a similarly struggling team would confirm the need for major changes. Kevin Montgomery of Westland remarked, “The team is rock bottom. If they don’t win tonight, they have to make changes.”
While a victory could offer a glimmer of hope for a re-evaluation of Smith’s future, fans are skeptical. “Even if you win, you don’t really win in the end,” said Ferris, indicating that the outcome may not significantly alter the program’s trajectory.
