Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused leaders from the U.S., Israel, and Europe of exploiting the country’s economic woes to incite unrest and disrupt Iranian society amid ongoing protests. These demonstrations, which erupted in late December in response to high inflation and increasing living costs, have reportedly diminished following a violent crackdown by Iranian authorities. Human rights group HRANA claims that at least 6,563 people have lost their lives during this period, including 6,170 protesters and 214 members of the security forces. Conversely, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that the death toll is around 3,100, with about 2,000 security personnel among the deceased.

During a live broadcast on state television, Pezeshkian contended that foreign nations have played a role in escalating tensions by providing resources and support to dissenters, thereby attempting to “tear the nation apart.” He implied that the protests are not merely social grievances but rather a concerted effort to create discord within Iranian society.

U.S. President Donald Trump has openly backed the demonstrators, indicating that the United States may take action if Iran persists in its crackdown. Amidst escalating tensions, U.S. officials confirmed that Trump is evaluating his options concerning Iran, although no decision has yet been made regarding military action. Meanwhile, an Israeli news outlet reported that a U.S. Navy destroyer docked at the Israeli port of Eilat, signaling heightened military readiness in the region.

Pezeshkian insisted that the involvement of external powers was aimed at provoking internal divisions, asserting, “They brought them into the streets and wanted… to sow conflict and hatred among the people.” In light of these developments, regional actors such as Turkey, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia have engaged in diplomatic dialogues to avert a military confrontation between Iran and the U.S.

The U.S. has demanded that Iran limit its missile program in order to resume negotiations, a condition that Tehran has categorically dismissed. Araqchi stated that discussions around its missile capabilities would not be entertained. He further expressed that Iran is prepared for both dialogue and military readiness, emphasizing the resilience of its political system. “Regime change is a complete fantasy,” Araqchi remarked, affirming the strength and stability of Iran’s governance structure despite external pressures.
