Sokovoli Odrovakavula, affectionately known as Soko, embarked on a transformative journey through an academic scholarship in Indonesia, an experience that has significantly impacted his views on education, tradition, and regional cooperation. Now serving as an instructor at the Fiji National University and president of the Indonesian Scholarships Fiji Alumni, Soko is dedicated to encouraging more Fijian students to pursue similar enriching opportunities.
During an information session organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Suva, Soko shared insights about how his studies in Indonesia—a nation celebrated for its diversity, discipline, and innovation—have shaped his educational journey. He emphasizes the profound cultural immersion, stating, “Indonesia is not just a place to study; it is a place to grow.” He urges prospective applicants to embrace the transformative challenges of living and learning in a new cultural environment.
Reflecting on his time abroad, Soko fondly recalled the invaluable friendships, language skills, and expanded regional perspectives he gained. He acknowledged the challenges of adapting to a different education system but recognized that these experiences fostered resilience and independence within him.
Soko is now committed to mentoring students and strengthening the alumni network. Under his leadership, the Indonesian Scholarships Fiji Alumni has connected former scholars to promote cultural exchange and assist new applicants through the scholarship process. He is a firm believer that Fiji’s continued development relies on graduates who understand Asia’s economic and technological landscape.
“Our region is interconnected,” he expressed, highlighting that the knowledge and relationships cultivated overseas can directly contribute to Fiji’s progress. While acknowledging the difficulties involved in venturing abroad, Soko sees this journey as essential for personal growth and for nurturing independence among young people. He concluded with an encouraging call to action: “Step beyond your comfort zone and return to Fiji ready to serve.”
Soko’s journey serves as an inspiration for many, demonstrating that opportunities for international study can transform lives and enhance communal ties, which ultimately benefits Fiji as a whole.
