India’s scholarship and training programs are playing a crucial role in enhancing human resource development in Fiji while also strengthening the diplomatic and cultural ties between the two nations. Each year, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) offers over 3,000 scholarships to international students from approximately 180 countries, including Fiji, providing opportunities for higher education across various fields in India.
Sumit Mehta, the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, underscored that this initiative is a testament to India’s commitment to capacity building and knowledge sharing with Fiji and other Pacific nations. The Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme has also made significant contributions, with nearly 100 Fijian professionals benefiting from specialized training programs last year alone. To date, more than 1,000 Fijians have participated in these valuable opportunities since the program’s inception in 2007.
In addition to education, India and Fiji are collaborating on notable advancements in the healthcare sector. They are in the process of establishing a 100-bed super-specialty hospital in Suva, with the tender process currently underway and construction expected to commence following the completion of the procurement procedures.
Charan Jeath Singh, Fiji’s Minister for Multi Ethnic Affairs, Heritage, and Culture, highlighted the crucial impact of scholarship programs on Fiji’s national development. He noted that these initiatives equip participants with internationally recognized qualifications and technical skills. Scholars who return to Fiji bring invaluable knowledge, professional expertise, and global insights that fuel growth across various sectors. Beyond academics, these programs also foster interpersonal connections, granting scholars a deeper understanding of Indian culture and the enduring camaraderie between the two nations.
Sherine Prasad, a former ISSR scholarship recipient, recounted her positive experience participating in the program, particularly noting the academic opportunities and robust support systems provided during challenging periods like the COVID-19 pandemic. Her studies at Banaras Hindu University were marked by a strong focus on student safety and well-being, with authorities ensuring support and safe repatriation amidst high international travel costs.
These ongoing scholarship and training initiatives highlight the critical importance of education in fostering Fiji-India relations, as both nations remain committed to investing in people-centric development and nurturing lasting partnerships.
