Illinois Woman Sentenced to 50 Years for Poisoning Death of Retired Police Chief Boyfriend

An Illinois woman has received a 50-year prison sentence for the murder of her longtime boyfriend, Richard “Rick” Young, a retired police chief. Marcy Oglesby, 53, was sentenced on October 27 following her conviction for first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery related to the case.

Prosecutors revealed that Oglesby poisoned Young’s food and drinks using eye drops over several months, starting in the summer of 2021. This poisoning spree culminated in Young’s death on November 1, 2021. After his death, Oglesby concealed his body in a storage unit situated across the street from their residence. It was not until nearly a year later, on October 7, 2022, that Young’s decomposed remains were discovered.

Young, who was affectionately known in his community as “Rick the Cop,” was remembered as a dedicated public servant. Knox County State’s Attorney Ashley Worby highlighted his willingness to assist neighbors and his skills in repairing and building, attributing great pride and precision to all his work.

During the trial, Oglesby maintained her innocence, asserting that her relationship with Young, which spanned two decades, was against her will. In a victim impact statement, Young’s friend Natalie Mason expressed relief that justice had been served, conveying that although Young could not speak for himself, his voice was ultimately heard.

Rick Young passed away at the age of 71 and is survived by three sons and five grandchildren. The outcome of this case serves as a grim reminder of the tragic consequences of violence in personal relationships and the importance of justice for victims and their families.
