Sean Grayson has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of Sonya Massey in Sangamon County, Illinois, after being found guilty of second-degree murder for the shooting incident that occurred in July 2024. this verdict was delivered in October 2024.
During the sentencing, the judge emphasized the grave danger posed to the community by Grayson’s actions, particularly noting that firing three rounds in a neighborhood endangered other residents and that a strict sentence was essential to deter similar behavior in the future. The judge rejected the defense’s argument that Grayson, having lost his rights to carry a weapon and work as a police officer, was unlikely to offend again, suggesting that the shooting resulted from a temperamental response rather than a singular incident.
Should he serve the entirety of his sentence, Grayson will be 51 years old upon his release. A hearing for his appeal has been scheduled for March 6.

Massey’s children, who made poignant statements during the hearing, conveyed their heartbreak, with her daughter, Summer, stating, “Since her death, I have not been the same person,” and her son, Malachi, sharing a sentiment of emotional devastation.
Grayson’s defense team attempted to mitigate the sentence by submitting character references and arguing for probation instead of incarceration, citing Grayson’s previous good behavior and his recent diagnoses of Stage 3 and Stage 4 cancer. They contended that imprisonment could pose a risk to his health. However, the judge dismissed the notion that Grayson’s medical treatment would be adversely affected by his incarceration.
The shooting incident, which unfolded when Massey called for police assistance regarding a possible prowler, ended tragically when Grayson shot her.
