Illini Return to Chicago for Alabama Clash at the United Center

Illinois basketball is set to host Alabama on Wednesday in what marks their first regular-season game at the United Center since 2018. The Illini have a long-standing tradition of playing in Chicago, continuing this practice every year since 1994, except for a break in 2009. However, after a disappointing loss to Ohio State in 2018, which saw just 5,285 fans in attendance, head coach Brad Underwood chose to end this tradition.

Following a resurgence in the team’s performance in recent years, excitement is building for the return of this historic matchup at the United Center. This game presents a fantastic opportunity for alumni and fans in the Chicagoland area to witness the Illini compete against a formidable opponent. Additionally, the upcoming seasons will see Illinois facing other high-profile teams like UConn and Tennessee, which helps maintain the tradition of playing at the United Center.

“I’m expecting a great game. Expecting a great crowd. Looking forward to seeing a lot of orange and blue in the United Center,” Underwood expressed in anticipation of the event.

While the Illini competed at the United Center during the Big Ten Tournament in 2019 and 2023—with a record of just 1–2—Wednesday night’s game allows them another shot to improve their performance. Since 2017, Illinois holds a record of 1–4 at the venue, but with the increasing support for the team, fans are optimistic for a turnaround.

The Big Ten Tournament is scheduled to return to Chicago in 2026, making this game an invaluable chance for the Illini to gain comfort playing in the arena. Competing in various NBA venues during non-conference games is anticipated to better prepare the team for challenging environments they may encounter in the NCAA Tournament.

Illinois also carries the aim of securing a victory against an AP Top 25 team at the United Center for the first time since March 2005, when they triumphed over No. 23 Wisconsin to clinch their second Big Ten Tournament championship. This historic context adds an additional layer of motivation for the Illini players and fans alike as they look forward to the game against Alabama.
